Readers would queue up for a chance to meet you, you'd have a few seconds to try to come up with a witty inscription (or resort to your default), double check that you had their name spelled right, scrawl your note and signature, and on to the next reader.
With the advent of e-readers, that led to frustration for both readers and authors. Readers wanted to collect their favorite authors' autograph and any special words of wisdom. Authors lamented the loss of the "face to face" connection (although, truth be told, it was hard to get much face to face time when you're busy writing a note, signing it, and there's a line of folks waiting).
I tried to make my own inscriptions for a few of my e-books by creating an image file of a hand-written note and inserting it into the front pages. But this was clumsy and not every e-reader formatted the image properly. Plus, there was no way to personalize my note.
Now there's a new way to send readers a personalized inscription and autograph! Evan Jacobs at Kindlegraph has made it easy for both authors and readers.
Authors, simply list your e-book on Kindlegraph.com and they'll email you when a request for an autograph arrives. Click HERE to see a video on how it all works.
You can see my Kindlegraph page HERE
Readers can visit the site and request their favorite author's autograph. And, unlike other virtual autograph systems, Kindlegraph is FREE for both readers and authors. How cool is that?
I'm hopeful that soon there will be a way to do this via e-pub formats as well as the Kindle format. But until then, it's nice knowing that I have one more way to connect to my readers!
